A Weekend Getaway to Lake Kawaguchi: Stunning Views of Mt. Fuji

Before leaving Japan, my parents and I decided to take a weekend getaway to Lake Kawaguchi (河口湖) near Mt. Fuji at the beginning of March 2024.

During our drive, we were treated to a breathtaking view of Mt. Fuji. Its majestic size and the snow-capped peak were simply picturesque, making it clear why Mt. Fuji is a symbol of Japan.

There was still some snow on the ground as we drove through Jukai (樹海), which means "The Ocean of Trees." It’s also known as a place where compasses stop working, making it easy for hikers to get lost.

Before reaching Lake Kawaguchi, we made a stop at a waterfall called Shiraito-no-Taki (白糸の滝). We were mesmerized by the contrast between the mountain and the waterfall.

Shiraito-no-Taki (白糸の滝):

Shiraito-no-Taki, one of the most famous waterfalls in Japan, cascades from a steep cliff at the boundary between the water-permeable Shin-Fuji Volcanic Formation at the top and the water-impermeable Old-Fuji Volcanic Formation at the bottom.

I love the nature in North America too, but I think the nature in Japan hits differently. Am I biased?

This was the view from our hotel the next morning.

After breakfast, we were lucky enough to capture the reflection of Mt. Fuji on the lake.

When you visit Kawaguchi-Ko, I highly recommend you to go visit Fuji Yoshida city (富士吉田).

Fuji Yoshida city (富士吉田)

Fujiyoshida City is one of the towns closest to Mt. Fuji. The old-fashioned Honmachi-dori (本町通り) shopping street, where the large Mt. Fuji can be seen directly in front of you, has become a view spot that attracts tourists from all over the world.

Found a cute sign for a bar in a small alley. It's called "Bar Sexy"—haha!

My favorite spot was the cafe FUUTO COFFEE AND BAKE SHOP.
The desserts and coffee were excellent, and the space was clean and cozy.

Take a nostalgic walk through this charming town to enjoy its old-fashioned atmosphere while feeling close to Mt. Fuji. It's perfect for those who want to experience the city like a local, with just the right amount of excitement and discovery!

It was a wonderful weekend getaway immersed in stunning nature. While big cities often overwhelm us with crowds, being just a few hours away from such serene natural surroundings allowed us to relax and fully disconnect.
